Quick summary: This activity has been developed to give children the opportunity to learn more about why healthy food and water are important. While educators keep food safety and potential allergies in mind, children try some seasonal foods they may have not tried before. This aligns with the Australian Healthy Eating Guideline number 7:
- Encourage children to try different food types and textures in a positive eating environment.
This activity is designed to help connect children to the wonders of the natural world through sensory and play-based learning.
In 2017, WWF is celebrating 10 years of Earth Hour and 10 years of progress on changing climate change. Our actions on climate change will shape the future for our children. They know more about climate change than any other generation. And they have extraordinary views on what they want for their planet. You and your children can become a part of the movement and start to take action on climate change by visiting earthhour.org.au to register for Lights Out or find your local event. Take part and register for Earth Hour Schools Day on Friday the 24th March and don’t forget to switch off on Earth Hour, on Saturday 25th March 8:30-9:30pm. Switch off to #JoinTheFuture.

Equipment needed: You can choose to provide a range of different fruits (Option A) or different varieties of the same fruit (Option B). When selecting this activity (Option 1 or 2) check with the children’s health forms / parents in case of any known allergies to food, particularly fruits. If in any doubt, there are plenty of other Enviroweek activities to undertake.
- Option A: Fruits of Winter - Enough small pieces of the following fruits for everyone to sample:
- Navel oranges
- Option B: Pairs of Pears - Enough small pieces of the following pear varieties for everyone to sample (Note: We’ve chosen pears for this activity because pears are a fruit to which very few people are allergic. In addition, these varieties are usually available in stores in August. Having just 3 or 4 varieties to sample would be fine.):
