nudge-park-photoframeQuick summary: This lesson is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to enter the Nudge by Mirvac – Sustainability Film Competition. Building on activities from Sustainability Film Competition – Year 3 (Part 1), students explore what natural features they have in the school yard and add these resources to the map they made in Part 1. Students then work as a class to brainstorm ideas for improving the natural features of their school and make a map that shows how they would improve their school.

This lesson is part of the Nudge by Mirvac – Sustainability Film Competition unit. The Competition encourages young people (up to 18 years) to make a short film aimed at giving our community a ‘nudge’ on sustainability: ‘Nudge a neighbour, change a behaviour’. This year’s competition is focused on the theme ‘Re-imagining Resources’.

Content descriptions:

Year 3 Geography

  • The representation of Australia as states and territories and as Countries/Places of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples; and major places in Australia, both natural and human (ACHASSK066)
  • Locate and collect information and data from different sources, including observations (ACHASSI053)
  • Record, sort and represent data and the location of places and their characteristics in different formats, including simple graphs, tables and maps, using discipline-appropriate conventions (ACHASSI054)

Syllabus outcomes: GE2-1, GE2-4.

General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking.

Cross-curriculum priority: Sustainability OI.7.

Relevant parts of Year 3 Geography achievement standards: Students describe the diverse characteristics of different places at the local scale and identify and describe similarities and differences between the characteristics of these places. Students pose questions and locate and collect information from sources, including observations, to answer these questions, and record and represent data in different formats, including labelled maps using basic cartographic conventions.

Unit of work: Nudge by Mirvac – Sustainability Film Competition – Year 3 & 4

Time required: 60 mins.

Level of teacher scaffolding: Medium – lead students in lesson, engage students in class discussions.

Resources required: Student Worksheet – one copy per student OR computers/tablets to access the online worksheet. Sticky-notes, pens, A3 piece of paper for each student. Butcher’s paper and textas. Devices for accessing Google Earth.

Overarching learning goal: Students understand what natural and constructed features are, and map the natural features of their school using standard cartographic conventions. Students recognise some of the ways we can look after natural features, particularly at school, and understand how to make a map of a future school where natural resources are looked after.

Teacher content information: The Nudge by Mirvac – Sustainability Film Competition has been created to give communities a 'nudge' on sustainability. This year’s film competition has a focus on the theme 'Re-imagining Resources' and budding film makers will be asked to create and enter short films on the following focus areas: Water, Waste, Energy and Materials.
