This unit is designed to guide students using a Project-based Learning (PBL) approach.

• Years 4 to 6 lessons work across subject areas allowing for an integrated experience.
• Years 7 to 10 lessons are best used in Humanities/SOSE or Science classes, but could also provide integrated learning opportunities across curriculum areas such as English, Design & Technologies and the Arts.

Projects explored through a PBL approach typically have a longer time-frame than most other classroom tasks, usually stretching between one week and one term. Broadly, the stages of PBL are:

• Introduce a driving question
• Hold the entry event
• Develop the need to knows
• PBL time
• Debrief and reflection

Take 3 is an Australian charity that removes rubbish from the environment through education programs, international campaigns and clean-ups.

Take 3 believes in simple actions that address complex problems. Their call to action asks everyone to ‘Take 3 pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach, waterway or… anywhere and you have made a difference.’

Their international campaign has sparked a global movement that encourages everyone to get involved and help protect our oceans from plastic pollution. After all, the ocean provides us with the oxygen we breathe and the climate that sustains us. We need a healthy, clean ocean for our own survival.
