What a Load of Rubbish Primary

‘What a Load of Rubbish’ is a 2-hour short course that will help you engage Year 1 to Year 6 students in real-life learning. In this course, you will explore:

  • The different types of waste in schools.
  • How to conduct student-led waste audits to measure things like landfill, recycling, organic waste and paper.
  • How to empower students to undertake waste reduction projects.
  • Stories about what other schools are doing.

All classroom resources are mapped to Science and Maths in the Australian Curriculum and can be incorporated into an inquiry or integrated unit. The activities can also be used as a launch pad for student teams to undertake waste projects in your school.


Primary teachers, curriculum leaders, aides, education officers and service providers working with Years 1 to 6 students.


This 2-hour short course is available online. This course can be completed at any stage over a two-week period.
