Lesson summary

Introduce the concept of ratios to students through an environmental context. Students calculate the rates of carbon sequestration of ‘blue carbon’ methods compared as a ratio to traditional ‘green’ tree forests on land. They perform a number of calculations to prove their understanding.

Learning intentions:

Students will...

  • be able to solve practical problems involving ratios
  • demonstrate the efficiency of 'blue' carbon sources over 'green' carbon sources.

Success criteria:

Students can...

  • accurately use ratios to compare blue and green carbon sequestration rates.

Australian curriculum content descriptions:

Year 7 Mathematics:

  • Recognise, represent and solve problems involving ratios (AC9M7N08)

Syllabus outcomes: MA4-7NA

General capabilities: Numeracy, Critical and Creative Thinking

Cross-curriculum priority: Sustainability

Relevant parts of Year 7 Mathematics achievement standards: Students use mathematical modelling to solve practical problems involving rational numbers, percentages and ratios, in financial and other applied contexts, justifying choices of representation.

Level of teacher scaffolding: Low – support students in their understanding and independent work.

Resources required

  • Student Worksheets – one copy per student
