Activity Introduction
Quick summary: In this activity, children recognise that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have strong connections to Country and that this includes caring for plants and animals that live in this Country. Children explore the ways that they can care for plants and animals in the place that they live and at their centre.
This activity is designed to give you an understanding of how to introduce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives to children and to help you build your confidence in sharing this topic with children and families.
This activity forms part of the unit Caring For Country: Introductory Lessons and Themed Activities. It is recommended that the Introductory Lessons be completed before exploring any of the themed activities with children in order to give them a basic understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures.
Resources required:
- Photos of features and places in your local area, such as the shops, park, beach, your centre – ensure you have at least one image of a natural feature at your centre (e.g. the big tree in the backyard of your centre, or a garden, or a grassy area, or a collection of rocks or logs)
