Activity Introduction

Quick summary: In this lesson, students will learn about forces and use this information to investigate the science of a coward punch. They will practice identifying and representing forces in free body diagrams and apply these models to everyday scenarios including collisions and falling objects. This lesson is part of the wider unit of work STOP the Coward Punch: Science – Years 9 & 10.

Time required: 80 mins.

Level of teacher scaffolding: Medium to High – the teacher will moderate class discussions, run group activities and facilitate learning around a topic of violence which will require sensitivity and nuance.

Resources required:

  • Device capable of presenting a video to the class
  • Student Worksheets – one copy per student.

We use arrows to draw forces. The direction and length of the arrow are both important. For now, we will use a square to represent our object. Draw all arrows from the middle of the box, going outwards.
