Activity Introduction

It’s never been easier to make new friends! Turn your old socks into talking puppets and let them come to life to play with you. Whether you will be entertaining your siblings with a puppet show or just amusing yourself, you will be having fun for hours.

Safety advice: Buttons can be very small so be careful not to let your kid/s put them in their mouth or swallow them and definitely keep them away from noses and ears. Try to use ‘non-toxic glue’ as this is safer for kids to use.

Younger kids will need support to complete this activity.

Ideal for: Early Learning Ages 0 – 4

Themes:

  • playtime
  • be creative

Time required: 15 minutes plus plenty of time for play!

Tips for Parents and Carers

If your kid/s have a favourite bedtime story it could be fun to make the sock puppets to look like these characters and then you could use them before bed to help put them to sleep. Please note: You could also sew the eyes on rather than use glue, but this is a little harder for young kid/s to do themselves, so glue is recommended as a binding agent to keep them more involved in the creation process.

Sock Puppet - Activity Instructions

It’s never been easier to make new friends! Turn your old socks into talking puppets and let them come to life to play with you. Whether you will be entertaining your siblings with a puppet show or just amusing yourself, you will be having fun for hours.

Safety advice: Buttons can be very small so be careful not to let your kid/s put them in their mouth or swallow them and definitely keep them away from noses and ears. Try to use ‘non-toxic glue’ as this is safer for kids to use.

Part A: Make Your Puppet

Step 1. Put the sock on your hand and think of where you want the eyes to go. You can choose to use a marker to mark the spots if you like. If you are using old tights, think of how long you want your puppet to be and cut the tights with the scissors.

Step 2. Lay the sock out and apply glue to the back of the first button. Place in position on the sock. Repeat with the second button.

Step 3. Leave the glue to dry for some time after this
