Being stuck inside because of the coronavirus or bad weather doesn’t mean that you can’t go anywhere. Introducing the transport box! Do you want a spaceship to take you to outer space? A car to take you to the beach? A train to take you to the countryside? A tram to take you around the city? A plane to take you to a beach destination? It’s all possible with a little help from your imagination.
Safety advice: Scissors and knives are sharp and pointy and are very dangerous. Parents/caregivers should stay close and help with these objects.
Younger kids will need support for the craft component of this activity but will need minimal help with their imagination. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to make and will keep them entertained for long periods at a time.
Ideal for: Early Learning Ages 2-4
- chill time
- be creative
Time required: 15-30 minutes depending on how much time you spend on construction

It’s often noted that kids sometimes enjoy the box their gift comes in more than the actual gift – this activity requires very little craft and gets their imagination flowing.
EYLF – Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity
- Large box – preferably large enough for your kid/s to be able to comfortably sit inside
Learning@Home from Cool Australia
Learning@Home resources are designed for parents and teachers to use with children in the home environment. They can be used as stand-alone activities or built into existing curriculum-aligned learning programs. Our Learning@Home series includes two types of resources. The first are fun and challenging real-world activities for all ages, the second are self-directed lessons for upper primary and secondary students. These lessons support independent learning in remote or school settings.
Cool Australia’s curriculum team continually reviews and refines our resources to be in line with the Australian Curriculum.
