Lesson summary

In this lesson, students are introduced to the challenges of the lived experience of homelessness by viewing the opening scene of the Life After The Oasis documentary. They will then explore a range of media articles that explore the issues associated with homelessness and how statistics have been used to present information. Students will use their understandings of homelessness and data representation to manipulate Australian Bureau of Statistics data cubes to calculate five-number summaries. An option to use this data to create box and whisker plots has also been included.

Learning intentions:

Students will...

  • investigate and analyse the use of statistics in the media reports.
  • understand how statistics and data can be used to describe homeless demographics.
  • find the five-number summary (minimum and maximum values, median and upper and lower quartiles) of data sets on homelessness

Success criteria:

Students can...

  • identify and explain why a graph is misleading
  • identify and evaluate the use of statistics in the media reports
  • determine the five-number summary (minimum and maximum values, median and upper and lower quartiles) of data sets on homelessness
