Activity Introduction

Quick summary: Students identify the main ways they can go about reducing their water wastage. They systematically go through all the ways they use water and identify the best way to use it without waste.

Key lessons and understandings of activity:

  • We need to use water often during the day. We can use water so that a lot less is wasted.

Introduction

We all need to use water for many purposes. When we use water we can work out ways so less water is wasted.

Confirm whether the student toilets are dual flush.

In a school most of the water is used for flushing toilets (about a third), watering sports areas and maintaining the lawn.

 Activity

Ask class to make a list of ways students use water each day. The main uses include drinking, cleaning (eg hands, teeth, body) and the toilet.

Use one student to role play each kind of activity. (Be prescriptive about the toilet and ask them just to flush it and the rest of the students can make the sounds). After each role play, work out the best way not to waste water.

When you get to the toilet discuss how dual flush works. Work out why there are two different flush modes. Ask students to use polite language to describe when a half flush should be used.

Take students to a tap (preferably outside so water can go onto the grass or garden). Place the jug
