Overarching learning goal: Students write a plan to improve their classroom waste collection system.

Student and classroom organisation:

Assessing the classroom waste system

Step 1. Revise the word 'container' with your students. Ask for some examples of containers (e.g. bins, tubs, box etc). Point out that some schools have as many as five containers for collecting different types of waste in a classroom. Write these on the board:

  • Paper reuse box or bin
  • Paper recycling box or bin
  • Bottle and can recycling box or bin
  • Food scraps bin or bucket (for composting or chooks)
  • Rubbish bin.

Ask students which ones they have in their classroom and write these on the board.

Step 2. Ask students to focus on the types of containers that the class doesn’t have at the moment in the classroom. Which ones should we have? Write these on the board. For each of these, discuss with your students:

  • What type of container should we now have? (E.g. box/bin.)
  • How big sho
