This lesson can be used with all the learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. Cool Australia’s curriculum team continually reviews and refines our resources to be in line with changes to the Australian Curriculum.  

Time needed: 20 minutes

Level of teacher scaffolding: Low – allow students to explore the topic independently.

Resources required: Internet, laptops and earphones, Student Worksheet.

Overarching learning goal: Students take responsibility for their own learning by watching a video on sustainability and completing a thinking routine about the concept of sustainability. 

Teacher content information: Sustainability describes the ability for something to keep going at the same rate and in the same condition as before.

It is tempting to think that because we are at the top of the food chain we should be able to do anything we want and it will be sustainable to keep doing it for as long as we like. Unfortunately nature does not work like this – our planet is finite. Every living system can only take so much exploitation before it starts to weaken and decline. When this decline reaches a tipping point the living system is finished and can never reclaim its former glory.
