Activity details: In this activity the class works together to create a poster, collage or mural that shows the journey that water makes on its way from rain to the sea.

Key lessons and understandings of activity: This activity has been designed to allow children to imagine and explore the aspects of the water cycle. Children will develop an understanding of waterways being important to the health of humans, animals, nature and the sea, and that water can take a long journey to the sea.

Activity outline

Can you imagine the journey that our rivers and creeks take as they travel to the sea? They probably see some amazing things, going through beautiful, peaceful countryside and small country towns, past big gum trees and wetlands full of frogs, turtles and birds, and along side busy cities full of lots of people and boats.

Instructions:

Ask your students the following questions:

  • Have you ever visited a river or a creek?
  • Do you know where rivers and creeks end?
  • Did you know that some of them finish at the sea?

As a class design a collage, poster or mural on a big piece of paper showing the journey that rivers and creeks take on their way to the sea. As they paint, ask your students to think about the following questions:

  • What do the rivers see on their way to the sea?
  • Who do they meet?
  • Who do they take with them?
  • Do they take fishes and ducks, or boats and canoes? What do you think?
