What’s It Like To Be a General Manager?
What does your role involve?
My main role is to keep the business growing so we can continue to have a big impact on students, parents and educators. My job is to support the Cool Team so that they can excel in their own role. I also support the CEO with making big picture decisions on the direction of the business. The important thing for my role is to know the business inside out.
What does a typical day look like?
Coffee. Then another coffee. Then email checking and do some admin. Then meetings with potential new partners. Then meetings with the team. I manage the budget and the strategy at the organisation too.
What road did you take to get to your current role?
High school —> travel —> waitress —> uni —> teacher —> Cool Australia. The best thing about being a general manager is that most of your skills are interpersonal or relationship-based skills. Thankfully all my roles up until this point have involved loads of people. I have learnt to collaborate, manage, support and sell things to people.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
My kids at 5.30 am!!!! Also knowing I can help to make the world a better place. I love education. I love what it can do for individuals and the society. It’s the secret sauce to a well functioning society.
What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?
Trust and believe in yourself. Be a good person and opportunities will always open up.
