Developed in partnership with the film Life After The Oasis, this year 9 & 10 English unit has been designed to explore the lived experience of youth homelessness and how it is conveyed through the media, and in biographical writing, poetry and song lyrics. The lessons encourage the development of text structures, literary devices and language use within a contemporary social issue.

The unit uses character stories from the documentary film Life After The Oasis to help students engage with the issue of homelessness, and understand the challenges involved in solving such a complex problem. The film aims to raise awareness of the issues, interventions and mindsets associated with youth homelessness in Australia.

Finding Out

Students will need to obtain more information about the issues they are going to investigate. They can identify questions of interest and research these either in small groups or on their own. Once information is gathered, it can be shared using chosen communication methods e.g. short presentations. Students can continue finding out by completing a range of investigations, including gathering data. They use appropriate methods to present and communicate what they have found out.
