The influence of advertising on sugar consumption
The lessons in this unit look beyond the science of sugar to how sugary products are marketed and sold. Much of the added sugar in our diet comes from the processed foods and drinks we buy and consume. This unit encourages students to critically consider advertising messages within their own environment, developing skills and knowledge from the English curriculum.
The World Health Organisation says that for good health, we should limit our daily added sugar intake to 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day. On average, we consume 14-16 teaspoons per day. Teenagers consume more than 20. Eating too much added sugar is a key driver of serious health problems including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, tooth decay, dementia and mental health conditions. A poor diet also puts children behind their peers, affecting brain development, sleep and ability to learn.
This unit of lessons focuses on helping students develop the skills and knowledge they need to critically analyse the advertising messages about food and drink in their environment. Aligned with the English curriculum, it equips students to make healthy and informed choices about their purchases and food.
